Hello,

I hope you and families are fine. Thank you so very much for the big efforts you continue doing towards helping our schools and children. We really appreciate the big contributions you have made towards the improvement of the key infrastructure that has enabled us realise our dream of offering quality education to children in need who otherwise would not have had a chance to .

At the moment we are working on the Kitchen construction, thanks to your efforts and generous contributions we have made a significant stride towards completion of the project. We understand the economic situation throughout the world has been unfavourable for most us and thus raising funds enough to complete this project has taken considerably longer time and thus the budgets have slightly been affected mainly due to the increase in prices of some of the construction materials.

We have done ground floor both the walls and floor as well as fix doors and windows and also install electricity and construction of the smoke chimney . On the ground floor we only remain with painting of the walls as the final item. The upper floor still has a considerable amount of work to be done these include roofing, plastering of the walls and floor , painting of walls, fixing of the doors and windows and installation of electricity. So far so good, the major structural bits are done and thus what remains are the finishing bits which if we are able to get enough funds we should be able to do them in a very short time. Unfortunately a few needed materials prices have gone up slightly. This has made us re- evaluate the estimated cost of the remaining work to complete the kitchen project. In total our estimated cost to complete the construction is ksh. 452,000/ $5795. (@78 a $)

I hope we shall be able to raise the remaining funds in time because in most cases the cost of building material keep going up and thus straining our budget.

Sanitary facilities(toilets) another of the most important projects we are looking forward to is getting urgent by the day. We have been buying time all the time we are given dateline by the City council public health department but now our luck is running out fast. We had a visit from the public health inspectors a few days ago and they gave us yet another dateline with a stern warning to me that unless we meet the health standards required as far as the sanitary facilities are concerned by May this year I’m going to be prosecuted and the school is going to be closed down. This time they told me there will be no extension and that there will be no further notice.

Our estimates have slightly gone up since we first put them forward in the year 2009.

Like the Kitchen project we can do the project in phases. Since the sum involved is large and raising such amount at once is not possible, we could be doing the project in phases that we can afford.

I’m quite sure that if the public health inspectors come while we are already working on the toilets we shall have an excuse to put to them.

Celebration After Exam Scores Arrived

Dear Friends,

I hope this finds all of you and families fine. I write this email with a lot of happiness. We have had good KCSE results last two years but the 2010 results were the best ever. The day started as normal but as it progressed, the minister for education announced the release of the 2010 KCSE results and the mood turned in to anxiety , the question was , how did our students perform? Did they do well? Everybody including me were holding their breath .Immediately the results were announced, I was on my way to the education office at the city centre to collect our results. The whole distance I kept wondering what the results will look like. I had a big sigh when I looked at the results at first. I did not think much of it until I arrived at school and together with the teachers we looked at the results again, it is then that I realized how good our students had performed , The teachers were so happy that they started singing, children could not stand the noise and soon they were all out their classrooms and joined in the celebration. The children and the teachers in celebration danced through the school gates in to the village where they were joined by parents and neighbors, what had started as small celebration quickly turned in to a very big celebration of song and dance. We crowned the celebration the next day by having chicken for lunch for the teachers and other staff.

We all appreciate the big support you have and continue giving to our children especially those of you who are sponsoring children . You are giving these children hope and opportunity in their future life. We are happy many of them are working very hard to improve their future life and that of their families by studying hard. From the 2010 form 4 class we expect 15 students to get university entry on Government aided program and 33 qualified to go to university but through the self sponsored program which is a little more expensive than the government aided one. The celebration is dying down and we are now focusing on the KCSE and KCPE examination for this year. Thank you so very much those of you who contributed towards examination fee for both 2010 and 2011. Those who contributed for 2010 , your generosity has brought hope and is promising a bright future for the children who passed their exams well. For those who did contribute this year we are working hard to get good results again.

Our prayers and wish is that more and more sponsors come forward to sponsor children both at WHS and GPS for it is the sponsorship that has kept these children in school, put books in their hands, keep teachers in class and so much more that enables the children to learn well and before our own eyes transformation of our poverty stricken community is taking place and soon and very soon light will be showing at the end of the tunnel. What we most need at the moment is to have more children sponsored so that we can shorten the journey to prosperity for our community. On this may I take this opportunity to urge our sponsors whose children did the KCSE exams last year or are no longer coming to our schools to consider sponsoring another needy child ,we all reach out to our friends, family ,colleagues, church etc and spread the word, for the more sponsors we get we shall be able to keep so many more children in school and many lives will be transformed in the process. In conclusion I must again thank all of you, the entire KKIN team for the big effort you have and continue putting in helping our children and attribute the success our children are having in their studies to your commitment.

eBay Auction a Huge Success!!

We tallied all the figures from the eBay auction after it ended last night. We earned a grand total of $1400.93!! This is very good news. (There is always the possibility that some winner will not pay for their item, but we have had very good compliance on that. So hopefully this amount will hold up after all payments have been received.)

We do have some items that we did not have time to put up in the first round. We will be listing those next week, along with any item that did not sell in Round 1 and some new donations that came in after this round started. Right now we are set to go with Round 2 for the remaining items next Friday, November 26th.

So.....how are we doing on reaching our goals? Not bad!! The first goal was to pay off the loan which was used for the extraordinary expense related to this year's KCSE exam. We needed a total of $2335 to cover the extra expense of supplies for the practical portion of the science subjects. We had already raised $1027 before the auction started. We had $1308 to go. This covers that!!!! So GOAL # 1 IS MET!!! YIPPEE!!!

We have approximately $92 of the auction money leftover to work on Goal # 2. We also received another $5 donation from a sponsor and a $15 donation from a non-sponsor! So we are $112 on our way toward the $880 that we need to cover all of our 2011 Standard 8 kids taking their KCPE exams. Just $768 to go and we will assure every single Standard 8 student that they can take their exam. This exam determines whether they can continue on to high school. We want them all to have this chance.

We still have one week to go in the iPod drawing. I have not included any money collected for tickets for the drawing. I am waiting until we have a grand total when the deadline hits. That will put a dent in the remaining $768. That plus Round 2 of the auction should cover all of Goal # 2. That is my sincere hope.

Then comes Goal # 3. This is where we attempt to tackle the enormous task of paying for the KCSE for our 2011 Form 4 kids. We expect to have 70 candidates next year. Our goal is to raise 1/2 of the money needed - with Fanuel attempting to raise the other half on his end, from parents and businesses. That particular target (our half) is $3815. That money is needed by February 1st of next year. The more we can make on the iPod tickets and the second round of the auction, the less you will have to hear from us trying to raise these dollars! :)

Kenya's Kids in Need is having an eBay auction to raise funds for Galilee Primary School and Waddington High school exam fees in the Kayole-Soweto Slums of Kenya.

At the complete of both primary and secondary school students in Kenya take the national Certificate Exams. These exams are extremely important as the results determine who can go on to receive a higher education. The cost of registering for the exams is prohibitive for the majority of our families who live on less than a dollar a day. Many of our families live in one room, tin sheet huts without electricity or running water. What little income they might make goes for the basics like providing a meal a day for their family. They struggle to send their children to school and the children struggle to receive an education.

Education is their path out of poverty and Kenya's Kids in Need wants to make sure their hard work is rewarded by assuring every eligible student is able to take the exams.

Very Urgent – Additional Exam funds Needed for the class of 2010!

This just in from the school director, Fanuel …

Our form 4 graduating high school seniors, started their KCSE (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education/national school leaving exam), on Thursday 21st, so far everything is running smoothly. We are all praying that they perform well. This morning we received the science (physics , chemistry and Biology) practicals confidentials (list of items each child need in the physics, chemistry and Biology practicals)

Unlike the other two years that we have taken part in KCSE exams this year the lists are almost tripled, especially the chemistry part. We have always been setting a side ksh 75,000 for the purpose of purchasing the items on the practicals (lab) list. This year we have been shocked with how much we need to do the purchases, we need ksh 250,000 about $3335. This has left us wondering what to do.

Physics practicals will be done on Friday next week, Biology and Chemistry practicals will be done the following week. It is because of this that we have been forced to seek assistance in raising funds to help us purchase all the items. In total we need about ksh.175,000 / $2335. Confidential lists for practicals usually remain secret and released only when the KCSE exams are underway.

If we are not able to raise the funds, means we shall not be able to purchase the needed items. Without the items our candidates will not be able to sit for paper three in biology, physics and chemistry. The three subjects have paper one, two and three .The candidates have to sit for all the three papers so that their scores can be graded ie A, B--- etc as per the marks they scored.

Last year we came together and raised the money so these students can sit for the exams, now they are in danger of not being able to sit for those exams. If anyone can help in this urgent need please email info@kenyaskidsinneed.org or donate today.

Holly House Holiday Happenings - An Update

We are in the middle of our fundraising campaign to supply the children of Holly House with a very special Christmas dinner and a gift of clothing. The children living at Holly House have no other home, no one to celebrate the holidays with, no one to provide them with gifts. They are primarily orphans or abandoned children. They have been provided a home in these orphanages connected to Galilee Primary School and Waddington High School.

It is our goal to provide these children with a special meal of chicken & rice and ice cream & soda. They look forward to this special meal for months. Chicken is a treat they do not often get to enjoy. And ice cream & soda make it even more festive!

We also want to provide each child with clothing as a holiday gift. Most of these children do not receive gifts under normal circumstances. All of them are in need of clothing. This will be a practical gift, but still very exciting to receive.

The fundraising target is $2170 to provide both the meal & clothing to 130 children. So far we have collected $894. We are almost half way there. Can you spare a few dollars to help an orphaned child in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, have a truly wonderful holiday? Just $9 provides the meal for one child. $10 provides clothing. For $19 you can cover one child completely. (For just $1276 you can close out this drive and provide the meal & clothing to all the remaining kids!!)

We've Come A Long Way!

Galilee has changed a lot since Fanuel wrote that letter back in 2003. At the time we had only a handful of sponsors, today we have close to 300. And thanks to the sponsors and other caring individuals, we have made many of the dreams, which Fanuel spoke about, come true.

Eventually we raised the money to purchase several plots of land and replace most of dangerous tin buildings with brick, so the children would no longer be injured while attending school, nor would they get rained on while trying to study. We also built Waddington High School and equipped it with textbooks, desks, and a fully functional lab. The small school that just 7 years ago had only 186 students now has over 1700. It goes from Baby class all the way through the completion of High School. With 41 paid teachers, the school no longer has to rely on volunteers.

In 2007 we brought both a potable water well and electricity to the school. Previously Fanuel had to purchase water and transport it for all the children. Now not only does the new well hydrate all the children, but also provides a small income to help with the cost of overhead. The newly wired electricity runs both the well and keeps the kids safer, as now they don’t run the risk of fires from kerosene lamps.

We have also expanded Holly House dramatically. We now rent two buildings and raised enough money to add a permanent third building. Now the orphans and destitute children of the Soweto Slums will always have a home and an education at Galilee. Today we have 130 children who call Holly House home.

And thanks to Feed the Children, every child at Galilee gets a hot meal every day. We no longer have students going days without food or giving up their meal so their siblings can eat. For many of our students this is the only meal they will get in a day.

Galilee has grown so big that Kenya’s Kids in Need became its own non-profit. Since then, several people have stepped up to help raise funds, organize book drives, email photos, mail letters and help the connection between sponsors and kids go as smoothly as possible.

All of these things happened because people all over the world cared enough to give and donate time to Kenya’s Kids In Need. They also told friends, neighbors and family members about our remarkable organization. Galilee, Holly House and WHS would not be where it is today if it wasn’t for these amazing people. It truly was built with love and $1 at a time.

We have made some wonderful things happen at Galilee and WHS, but we aren’t done.

• Every year we try to do something special for the children at Holly House on Christmas. This year we are fundraising for the kids to have a very special meal of chicken, rice, Ice Cream and soda. In addition, we would like to raise enough money so that every child at Holly House will receive a new article of clothing. For only $19 dollars you can provide a child with a full meal and clothing.

• Feed the Children has stipulated that the current kitchen needs to be replaced with one better suited to keep up with the needs. Presently we have just over $3000 left to raise to complete the job.

• In order to go on to further education or get jobs other than menial jobs, every form 4 student must take the KCSE at the cost of approximately $109 per student. Many of the student’s families make less than $1 per day, making paying for these exams nearly impossible. KKIN holds an annual ebay fundraiser to help pay for these fees. This year the fundraiser is planned to start on November 11. You can either make a donation directly to KKIN or place a bid on one of our fabulous items up for sale.

• In addition we are now faced with a wonderful problem of what to do with our Holly House students who have persevered through school and scored well enough to move on to college, trade schools, etc. These students have no family to help them in the transition period and help with school fees. An Excerpt of an Email Written in 2003 by the Director and Founder Fanuel Okwaro

The school started in 1997 having gone through non-formal school education from preschool to std.8. I was lucky to get a sponsor who saw me through my high school education. After graduating from high school I went back to teach as a volunteer in my former primary school.

It is during this time that God showed me another place where my services were really needed. What started like a walk in Soweto slums turned out to be a vision on which the school started. I and my friends were so touched by the number of children who were not going to school in the villages, then came this idea of doing something to make a difference in their lives is what led us to starting this school.

Most of the children coming to our school come from very poor backgrounds, these includes orphans,
destitute, street children for rehabilitation and children from very poor families who are sometimes abandoned by their parents due to economic constrains. We embrace all the children at risk and at least give them basic education, we also counsel them and pray with them for God to intervene in their hardships we do all this with the aim of molding them and giving them hope for the future. Presently we have four teachers who are working hard to attain our goal of caring and educating these children. They are all working on voluntary basis. Driven by the predicaments and plight of these children they are selflessly serving these children with an aim of making a difference in these children lives.

Today the school is offering education to children, rehabilitating the street children and offering counseling to those who are traumatized by one problem or another.

There are eight classes in the school. Ranging from pre – school to standard seven. The total number of
children at our school presently is 186 children, with their ages ranging between 4yrs to 18 yrs.

The school is expanding very fast with the activities we are undertaking, they suit the children found in the
area and thus they are attracted to our school. Although the expansion is fast it is inhibited by the
incapability of the school financially to expand the facilities and thus congestion occurring in the few
classroom we have

The free education introduced by the government has been actually a blessing, because before free
education was declared we had about 300 children who were a big problem to serve due to lack of facilities and finance. Although some of our children got chances in public school we still need to expand our facilities because the rate at which we are receiving new children in our school is very high and soon we shall go back to the 306 mark. For example in the month of February alone we admitted about 23 new
children and are still coming. Children still come to our school since it is an alternative to the public schools around which have very high demands like text books, shoes, uniform, games kit etc. which most parents are unable to meet. Another reason is the programs we offer are attractive to them.

We hope in the future to diversify the programs we are offering to include feeding program which is
really needed, secondary education, vocational training for the graduates who will be unable to continue.

We also hope to buy land on which we can build better facilities in order to take in more deserving cases. All these others will only be possible if we get donors who will assist as financially.

Bright Young Student Seeks Mentor

James is 16 years old in class 2 at WHS and living at Holly House. He is a very bright and kind boy. One day he hopes to return the kindness that was given to him by helping other children have access to an education. It would be my extreme pleasure to know that somebody somewhere thinks about me as I try to concentrate on my studies”

James lives at Holly House because his parents could not afford to pay for him to attend school. In addition they lived too far away for him to walk to school everyday. Without Holly House James would not be getting an education and a chance to stop the cycle of poverty.

A Little Holly House History

Holly House was opened in 2003 when Fanuel heard about two young girls who were being abused by their guardian and had nowhere else to go. Very soon after, several more children were found in desperate need of an education, food and a home, and needed assistance quickly. With the help of some wonderful sponsors, Fanuel was able to rent a house, find a “house mother” and give these 11 children a home and a chance at a brighter future.

Since then Holly House as grown so much that we built a permanent building, rent two other houses, and now provide a home to over 130 needy children. Today Galilee and Waddington High School have become so well known for excellence, that we have a handful of students from outside the slums that pay to be boarders at Holly House so that they may attend Galilee Primary and Waddington High School. This has been a win / win situation for the school. The children are able to attend one of the best schools in the area, and the money helps offset the cost of caring for the unsponsored children who cannot even afford the most basic of supplies, clothes or even food.

For only a $1 per day ($30 per month), you can provide a child at Holly House a room, three meals a day, basic school supplies, and school fees at Galilee Primary School or Waddington High School. You can see some of these amazing kids at www.kenyaskidsinneed.org

In addition we are now faced with a wonderful problem of what to do with our Holly House students who have persevered through school and scored well enough to move on to college, trade schools, etc. These students have no family to help them in the transition period and help with school fees. Holly House Holidays Fundraiser!

Each year we try to provide the children living in Holly House with a nice Christmas meal, something special to mark the holiday. The children really love the special day filled with treats they do not often get to enjoy.

The children at Holly's House are either orphans or have parents that are unable to care and provide for them. Fanuel opened a home where kids who would otherwise be living on the streets, can have a bed, 3 meals and day and an education. Holly House is the bright light in these kids tragic lives.

This year Fanuel tells us that the children would love to have a meal of chicken & rice, if there are enough funds to provide it. He has sent us prices for the favored meal and for a lesser, but still special, meal in case we cannot raise enough money for the chicken. (Both will include soda and ice cream, too!!)

The chicken meal will come to $9 per person. A meal of goat meat & rice would cost $6 per person. We will need to provide for 130 kids (including the house parents). So we need to raise $1170 for the chicken dinner or $780 for the goat meat dinner.

In addition, we would like to raise enough money to provide each HH child with an article of clothing as a gift. Fanuel thinks he can get something for each child if we raise $10 for each. We will not need to provide clothing for the house parents. And several of the children get clothing gifts from their sponsors for Christmas, so we are setting the goal at $1000 for this gift! If we can raise that much, every child should receive a shirt or skirt or pair of pants or some other item for the holiday. If we raise less, Fanuel will have less to spend per person, but he will still manage to get something for everyone - even if it's just a pair of socks!!

Can you help make the holidays special for the children living at Holly House? These are the children with no family to go to....no one to take care of them or to spend the holidays with.

The children attending Galilee Primary School range in age from 3 through their teens. Due to the fact that many of the children start school late and/or have their education interrupted, it is not uncommon to find older students in primary grades. Kenyan law requires a student start school in the early grades regardless of their age. Extreme poverty surrounds these children, but through sponsorship you will be participating in helping them break that vicious cycle. Education will ensure the children grow up with improved health, development, and opportunities.

Sponsorship is $12.50 a month and pays for school fees, and basic school supplies.

Hello,

I hope you and your families are fine.

Thank you so very much for your continued efforts at helping our schools take care of so many children.

As always please receive our heartfelt appreciations, your kindness has enable us put a big number of children back into the path of defeating poverty and thus change their lives, families and the community in general. The last two years has seen many of our form four candidates as well as class 8 candidates excel in their final exams 52/ 130 meeting the university entry criteria of C+ and big number of the remaining students getting grades that can lead them into very good courses in the middle class colleges which can as well open their opportunities to good careers. With out you all these would not have been possible. At the same time we look into the future with confidence since the students we have ,are working very hard and showing potentiality of success.
We opened for third term on Monday 6th of September. Before closing we had our form four class do mock exams as prepare them to seat KCSE later in October..

This ending of 2nd term has seen us start a journey upgrading our school kitchen from the temporary to a permanent structure, thank you very much those of you who have and continued helping us on this noble project. When the kitchen will be complete we shall have won over unhygienic environment and thus prevented communicable diseases like cholera ,diarrhea etc . The initial estimates for the whole project were $22605 about ksh 1,650, 000 for construction and $5205 about ksh.380,000 for land. Through KKIN UK we received the funds to buy land after buying land we received $ 10,000 from KKIN US to commence the project shortly after we received $3000 from KKIN UK. With these funds we did the foundation, the slab and the upper structure. We have enough building blocks and sand for the lower wall on site. Last month we received $2000 for the kitchen construction which has not been utilised, they are in our bank account. So far we have received $ 15000 for construction and $ 5205 for the purchase of land as it stands we still need $ 7605 for completion of the kitchen project, although some additional $500 will be needed they were not factored in the initial estimates for the newly designed smoke chimney ,for easier discharge of smoke from the cooking stoves.

Lastly I must thank many of you who have been purchasing items for your sponsored children from the OLS and those who have been able to send gifts and letters to their sponsored children, you may want to know that what you send , buy or write to your sponsored child is a major source of motivation for the child. And we encourage you to continue doing so since the same are of big help to the child.

I am 16 years old and am an orphan. When my parents died we moved in with my aunt. One day when we came home from school I found she had move to another place with her children and abandoned me. I stopped going to school and got employed as a house maid. But my boss treated me so badly. When I escaped I was lucky to be taken to Holly House and went back to school.

I’m an orphan. When my parents died I lived with my grandmother. She died last year. I did not have anyone else to take care of me. I remained alone with my siblings [2 sisters & 1 brother]. I have been living at Holly House for 4 years. I moved into Holly House after my father died and my mom was and still is very sick. She could not take care of me or my other siblings. She went to the rural home when she as seriously sick and that is when the director agreed I could stay at Holly House.

I like to play tennis and listen to Blues and R&B music. I like to ready fiction stories and the last book I read was “Tough Love”. I like to study English and Literature and really don’t like math.

I live in a family of 6. These include my parents , brothers and sisters. We live in a place called Kayole in Kenya. My favorite music is Raggu and RnB. This is because they contain useful information that educate youth’s They also entertain when one is at rest.

When I am in school I like sharing ideas with my friends so that I can know more. I also like asking questions for these help to increase my performance in class. When I graduate I would like to be a doctor for this is my dram. My favorite books include The River Between, and A half a Day,. These are some of the set books that our school uses. My favorite color is red this is because it shows seriousness in me. Therefore red shows how hardworking I am in my work.

What I like about school is that it manufactures useless boys and girls in society to useful and active members of the world. Those helps me to know my goals for me to know and understand my future,

Hi everyone!

For about 2.5 years I have been a member of an online group of
postcard collectors and recently I asked them to send postcard to the unsponsored
children at Galilee. Many loved the idea and sent one or more cards to the kids and one even became a new sponsor!!

For my own sponsor girl, Linda, I started an account on that website so I send postcards to different people and in return they send me cards for Linda. I have
an envelope full of cards from all over the world ready to be mailed to her! :D

Now we are inviting everyone to help shower the school with postcards. Our very own Postcard Shower.

But instead of writing to one specific child write something educational on the card. The cards can be used in class, for some fun geography lessons and to learn about other
countries and cultures. Wouldn’t that be great?!

Perhaps you could write something about your country/city on the card or
something about history? Geography? Chemistry? Or something related to your
interests and work/study!

This is an easy and fun way to connect with the children and the school in general and it’s also a fun way for our friends, family and colleagues to put some smiles on the faces of the kids at Galilee. So ask them to send some cards too!

Hello,

First and foremost received much greetings from me here at Lorna Waddington High School. The Almighty God has kept me well thought out the second term. I also hope that you are alive and kicking. It is my second year since I joined this school and I am doing great. I have by now made friends who have helped me in my academic work. I am now in form three and I only have one more year to do my final examination. I am working very hard to achieve my goals in life.

The teachers at school are very friendly and also very helpful. The do everything in their power to support us in every way they can. I am doing history and business studies a mouth the compulsory subjects as I hope to pursue a career in law or become a prominent businessman in the country. The term has been good in school. We have experienced cold in the month of July. Currently, it is sunlight throughout. Our country’s climate pattern has been adversely affected by the continuous destruction of our water catchment areas.

At the moment, our country is hit by serious calamity. Drought has hit most parts of our country. People are succumbing to hunger. Their animals are also not spared in the drought. People have resulted in eating wild fruit and also fruits such as mangos. The wild fruits and mangoes have also being finished. The government is trying as much as it can to help those affected with the famine by providing relief food.

The country is also experiencing soaring food prices. The cost of food and fuel have hit their highest. Water has also been a problem in the capital and other cities. The electricity is also being rationed due to the falling the water volume in the hills in our country.

I have been living at HH for 4 years. I am an orphan When my parents died I moved in with my aunt. One day when I came home from school she had moved to another place with her children and abandoned me. I stopped going to school and got employed as a house maid. But my boss treated me badly. When I escaped I was lucky to be taken to Holly House and I was able to go back to school. I like to play foot ball, and read books like Harry Potter and Nancy Drew. One day I would like to be a teacher.

My sister, brother and I have been living at Holly House for 6 years after my mother died. We went to live with my Aunt but she threw us out of the house. WE are lucky to have found at home at Holly House and the chance to make my life brighter. I like to play net ball and the color orange. I like to read the Boxcar Children books. My favorite subject in school is math, and science. I really don’t like social studies. When I grow up I want to be a doctor.

I have been living at Holly House for 5 years. I am an orphan and before moving into Holly House I was a domestic help. I wanted to continue my studies. There was no one else to take care of me. I like to play net ball, listen to gospel music and read Nancy Drew books. My favorite subject in school is math and I don’t like Kiswahili. When I grow up I want to be a nurse or a doctor and take care of orphans, homeless and widows.

Five years ago attending high school was only a dream to the children in the Kayole-Soweto slums of Nairobi. Sponsors and supporters of the students attending Galilee Primary School knew the key to breaking the hold poverty had on them was through education. Banding together and pooling resources, we purchased a plot of land and built Waddington High School.

By paying just $20 a month, you can sponsor a child at Waddington High School, and help change the course of their future. The cost of sponsorship covers your child's school fees, lunch and basic school supplies. As a sponsor, you can write to your child and provide welcomed encouragement. The children write treasured letters to their sponsors approximately 2 -3 times per year.

I was born to a family of four children. I am the eldest. I like reading, traveling, making friends and above all I like playing football. I also like going to school. I do live with my parents that is my father and a mother who is not my biological one because my biological [mother] passed away about four years ago.

My favorite food is chicken and ugali. My best music is all the gospel songs as I feel comforted with them and relived. Weill I like reading magazines and novel books. I have so many things that I have put as my topmost after my graduation but at the moment and in the future I would like to become an accountant.

Take the challenge and donate the amount of your fast food meal deal today! If you don’t do fast food how about your coffee money for 2 days?

Why?????

The kitchen at Galilee is too small, unsanitary, and lacks storage space. We need an upgrade! To make the needed improvements will cost $22,000 USD. KKIN-US has committed $10,000, all the money in the building fund, towards this project and KKIN-UK has raised an additional $3,912 and has purchased the land for the kitchen to be built on. The school needs an additional $8,088 to complete this project!

Two thousand meals a day or 10,000 meals a school week are prepared in this kitchen... a tiny, tin kitchen that might just blow down with a good rain storm.

What is needed:

We need everyone reading this to donate the cost of one meal deal. Six dollars, depending on the restaurant, times 1,348 meal deals and we'll have our kitchen! Will you eat a peanut butter sandwich or ramen noodles one day this week and donate your lunch money to the cause?

I am 19 years old and in Form 4. I have 3 brothers and 4 sisters. One sister is in form 3 and the rest are still in primary school. God willing my brother will be at WHS next year. I live with my parents but they are not financially stable. I would like to study for medicine or engineering since I am taking all the three sciences (Physics, chemistry and biology).

My favorite food is ugali and Kuku, which I like most and sick when not taken. The best music are those that praises God. I like reading novels like Harry Potter. After graduating I would like to learn computer and some languages like French while waiting for my exam results.

What I like about school is that we have to socialize with others who are from different places and tribes. We also make good friends and learn their cultures.

Meet Samuel

Samuel is 5 years old and in Nursery class at Galilee Primary school. He has a smile that could just melt your heart. He loves the color yellow and when he grows up he wants to be a teacher, but in order to do that he needs to finish school first. That is where you come in, for only $12.50 per month you can help him become that teacher.

Samuel deserves to grow up in a world where he can play, laugh, learn and develop his potential. Sadly, many children in the slums of Nairobi spend their days searching for food wondering if they will eat that day. They wander the streets instead of the aisles of classrooms because they can't afford school fees, uniforms and supplies. They shiver in one room shacks because they are wearing the only clothes they own and those are threadbare.

Let me introduce Antonet.

Antonet is one of our students that are looking for a sponsor. She is 14 years old and is in class 7 at Galilee Primary school. The children attending Galilee Primary School range in age from 3 through their teens. Due to the fact that many of the children start school late and/or have their education interrupted, it is not uncommon to find older students in primary grades. Kenyan law requires a student start school in the early grades regardless of their age. Extreme poverty surrounds these children, but through sponsorship you can help them break that vicious cycle. Education will ensure the children grow up with improved health, development, and opportunities.

Antonet wrote to her future sponsor “I would like my sponsor to know that my father died when I was a young girl. I am a hard working girl in class; I would like you to know that I don’t have a full uniform and dictionary.” She also wrote that she likes to play tennis and her favorite color is pink. Sponsorship for Antonet is just $12.50 per month.

Special Thanks to a wonderful Friend of Galilee!!

Stacks of new textbooks have been delivered to Galilee thanks to one of our wonderful supporters. In most classrooms of Galilee Primary & Waddington High School, textbooks are shared by as many as four or five students. This is not conducive to learning. We are always striving to bring the ratio of books to students up. This donation will certainly help in that regard. Thank you, Bob, for your continued support of our kids.

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Nairobi. I hope you and your families are fine.

As we have come to the end of the 2009 academic year we are full of thanks for the efforts and contributions you have made to make this year a success. The children and staff of our schools thank you for the big sacrifices you made to enable them learn and achieve their goals this ending year. The year started and has continued to be a very hard year for us and I hope for most of the world financially, for us the biggest challenge was drought, food prices and prices for other essential commodities. Electricity became and is still a very expensive service and yet very important for our institutions, without electricity drawing water from our water well will not be possible. We thank you so very much for standing with us in these difficult financial times.

The year started well and we thank all of you who were able to write a letter of encouragement, bought uniforms, shoes, school supplies, civilian clothes for our children, helped in equipping our laboratory and visited our school. You are all a big inspiration to us and the children. We believe in the smallest way we contribute, sacrifice towards these children we are making a positive change in their lives. Last year was our first time to have a KCSE candidate class and thanks to your kindness in supporting our schools we had 11 children qualify for public universities under the government program and 15 others who qualified to attend university but can only go their if they are able to sponsor themselves in payment of school fees. This year we also had a good class and thus we expect good performance in the just concluded KCSE exams.

We still have a very big number of needy children at our school. Your efforts have enabled many children to remain in school and many who did their KCSE exams last year achieved what would have been otherwise impossible.

Thank you so very much those of you who contributed to enable our children to take part in the National music competitions. The children really enjoyed as well as won several trophies on District and Provincial levels. In Mombasa most of them saw the Indian Ocean for the first time as well as swim and hike a boat ride, it was an experience they will not forget very soon

As the 2009 ends we are looking forward for the 2010 and hope that it comes with even more success for you and your families and for our programs as well.

Before I forget I would like to thank all of you who contributed towards the scientific calculators that are going to make it easier for our high students to learn Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Business studies. I must also thank KKIN US team i.e., Holly, Jen, Betsy and Tami for big efforts they have put into co-coordinating the inflow of information on both sides both on the sponsors side and also our side, I hope and pray that the same spirit is maintained for these will help us maintain the pace for development and achievement in empowering our poor children and thus empowering our community

Thank you so very much again for your kindness. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2010.

2009 Class 8 Graduation Celebration....

Hi, wanted to share pictures just in from the Gaililee Primary School Class 8Graduation Celebration. This is a very important day in the lives of these students and their families. It is a huge accomplishment for them to have made it through 8 years of school, for families to have paid half a months salary for school fees or to have been blessed to have a sponsor who paid the $12.50 a month for their child to attend school. Just having an 8th grade education will open up job opportunities for all of the children and it is known that if a girl has even an 8th grade education it dramatically reduces her chance of being abused or forced into the sex trade. When we first got involved at Galilee the school ended with Class Seven. High school was a distant dream! Now look at us~

Announcing “Over the Top” – 2010 Exam Fee Drive

“Over the Top” is now up and running, the monies from this fundraiser will be used to pay the registration expenses for our 2010 Standard 8 students at Galilee Primary School to take the Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education exam ($8/ student) and our 2010 Form 4 students at Waddington High School to take their Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education exam ($109/student.) These fees are to be paid by the school in February 2010. The students will sit for the exams in Oct/Nov of 2010.

These examinations are crucial to these students because without a passing score on their KCPE exam, Standard 8 students cannot enter high school.

And without passing the KCSE examination, high school graduates do not receive the certificate announcing that they have successfully completed their high school curriculum. This certificate is the key not only for better jobs in their futures but also, for those who do well, the key to higher education.

These examinations fees, especially for the high school students, are prohibitive in price for ANY Kenyan family living in abject poverty. It would be a great travesty if any student were to struggle to complete their high school education, only to be unable to take the final exam because they did not have the money to register for the exam. The headmaster at the Galilee schools, Fanuel Okwaro, has addressed this need to the families and their community. He has been successful in raising a part (close to half) of the money needed. He is asking us as friends and sponsors of the Galilee Schools to raise an additional $6800 to complete the project.

Failure in this endeavor is NOT AN OPTION! We HAVE to find a way so these kids who have struggled mightily will get their just reward. Do you have the means and the heart to help these kids??
